SENEGALESE FOOTBALL: Patrick Vieira, new head coach of the Lions of Teranga
It is official: Patrick Vieira is taking the helm of the Senegal national team. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed his appointment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, marking a strategic turning point for the nation’s football.
Born in Dakar in 1976 before growing up in France, the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winner is returning to his homeland. An Arsenal legend and a major figure in European football, Vieira has successfully transitioned into coaching, gaining solid experience at the helm of New York City FC, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, and RC Strasbourg.
The 50-year-old new boss of the Lions arrives with the aim of injecting fresh momentum and modernizing the national team setup.
One of his first key issues to address is team leadership. The captain’s armband, previously held by Kalidou Koulibaly, could be reassigned following a grueling 2026 World Cup campaign for the central defender. Vieira intends to rebuild a winning squad and instill a culture of elite-level standards.
The roadmap set by the FSF is particularly ambitious:
2027 AFCON: Lead Senegal to the final of the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
2030 World Cup: Build and qualify a competitive squad for the tournament to be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
With his dual cultural background, top-level experience, and tactical expertise, Patrick Vieira has all the qualities needed to meet the expectations of the Senegalese people. Now, the challenge lies in turning these ambitions into reality on the pitch and guiding the Lions to new heights.
