Loyalist forces have quelled a mutiny that shook the capital. Backed by the Africa Corps and Algeria, the regime is grappling with internal divisions stemming from the deteriorating security situation.

Niger was rocked by a serious military mutiny that escalated into an attempt to overthrow General Abdourahamane Tiani’s regime. After several hours of fighting and loud explosions in the capital, forces loyal to the government regained control of key strategic sites.

The events began around Air Base 101, located within the Diori-Hamani International Airport complex. Insurgent troops also attacked the area around the Presidential Palace and attempted to seize the national television station. The mutineers managed to control the airport complex for several hours but failed to secure a lasting hold on state media or the seat of the presidency.

Following the clashes, loyalist forces retook Air Base 101, and dozens of insurgents were arrested or neutralized. No official casualty figures have been released so far.

The intervention of Russian Africa Corps forces proved decisive in retaking strategic areas. Russian personnel provided ground and air support to the loyalists—a move confirmed by Russia’s ambassador in Niamey. Algeria also demonstrated its support by deploying military aircraft, including Su-30 fighter jets.

This attempted coup highlights the tensions running through Niger’s security apparatus. According to reports by Le Monde, the mutineers were reportedly young special forces officers frustrated by the heavy losses suffered against jihadist groups in the Tillabéri region. Although the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) has strongly condemned this destabilization attempt, this episode represents the most serious warning for Abdourahamane Tiani’s junta since it seized power in July 2023.
