It seemed perfect to the Beninese until it was downgraded by CAF. Rehabilitated in 2021 for a cost of 13 billion CFA francs, all this investment in the General Mathieu Kérékou Friendship Stadium (GMK) seems to have been in vain, as everything will have to be redone if Benin wants to host international football competitions.

The Squirrels’ matches are now played abroad due to the lack of a stadium meeting international standards. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued an unfavorable opinion regarding the General Mathieu Kérékou Friendship Stadium, which was renovated just three years ago.

13 billion CFA francs have been invested without any tangible result. However, to preserve the image of Beninese football, the government has decided to comply with international standards. Thus, a new rehabilitation of the stadium is announced.

The works will include the complete replacement of the current turf of the main field, which will be covered with natural grass with a half-moon. A synthetic turf training ground will also be built, to provide optimal conditions for the teams

.Other works will also be undertaken, representing undoubtedly billions of additional investments. However, it would have been possible, in collaboration with CAF technicians, to carry out a definitive rehabilitation with a slightly larger budget. Unfortunately, Benin has lost 13 billion CFA francs, as the stadium will be under construction again in the coming days.
