2026 WORLD CUP ROUND OF 32: South Africa, one of nine African countries eliminated
South Africa’s journey at the 2026 World Cup came to an end on June 28 in the Round of 32, following a defeat against Canada. Bafana Bafana thus became the first of the nine African teams that qualified for the knockout stage to bid farewell to the tournament.
Throughout the competition, the South African team displayed attractive football, combining tactical discipline, fighting spirit, and solidarity. Their performances fueled hopes of seeing an African nation continue its journey towards the pinnacle of this World Cup. Unfortunately, Canada’s clinical finishing, coupled with some offensive and defensive inaccuracies from the South Africans, brought their impressive run to a close.
Despite this elimination, South Africa can leave the competition with their heads held high. Their journey testifies to the progress made in recent years and confirms the potential of a young, ambitious, and promising group, capable of playing leading roles in upcoming continental and international competitions. While the world championship dream has ended for Bafana Bafana, hope remains intact for African football. Several teams from the continent are still in contention and continue to carry the ambitions of all of Africa.
To these teams still involved in the competition, we offer our encouragement and wish them every success for the remainder of the tournament. May their determination, talent, and winning spirit continue to make African football shine on the world stage.
