72nd MARIAN PILGRIMAGE to Dassa-Zoumè: Solidarity and Faith at the Heart of the Celebration
From August 21 to 23, 2026, Benin’s spiritual capital will welcome thousands of the faithful for the event, centered on the theme: « With Mary, let us love the poor. » The Our Lady of Arigbo Sanctuary in Dassa-Zoumè is preparing to host the country’s largest Catholic gathering once again. Over three days, pilgrims from Benin’s ten dioceses and the diaspora will gather at the Grotto for a profound time of devotion, penance, and social commitment.
For this 72nd edition, the Bishops’ Conference of Benin has chosen a clear focus: « With Mary, let us love the poor. » This theme highlights the charitable dimension of the Christian faith, calling upon every believer to show tangible solidarity with vulnerable people—such as orphans, the sick, widows, and the homeless. Collection booths and mutual aid stations will be set up on-site to give practical expression to this call.
Friday, August 21: Arrival and welcoming of diocesan pilgrimages, the Stations of the Cross, and a grand prayer vigil.
Saturday, August 22: Sacrament of Reconciliation (confessions), spiritual teachings, a Mass dedicated to the sick, and a Marian candlelight procession.
Sunday, August 23: Solemn closing Mass, concelebrated by the Bishops of Benin and a special envoy from the Holy See.
Beyond its religious significance, the pilgrimage serves as a major economic driver for the town of Dassa-Zoumè, significantly boosting the hospitality, restaurant, transport, and local commerce sectors. To ensure the smooth running of this event of national significance, local authorities are working closely with the Diocese of Abomey. Arrangements regarding security, medical assistance, and the setup of reception facilities are already being finalized to welcome the faithful under the best possible conditions.
