The announcement was made this Saturday, August 29, 2026, in Paris by Senate President Patrice Talon. Drawing on his role as a facilitator in the reunification of the Celestial Church of Christ (ECC), Patrice Talon highlighted the Beninese state’s direct involvement in this process. According to him, this support grants the authorities full legitimacy to define what officially constitutes the ECC in Benin and to prohibit the use of its symbols outside the approved framework.

This move is driven by the need to ensure collective security. The former president emphasized that internal disputes within religious communities risk escalating into deadly clashes, thereby justifying state intervention.

This initiative is part of a broader trend. Patrice Talon indicated that he had consulted with several African leaders who share the same concern and plan to tighten regulations regarding registered religious groups.

Benin is thus moving toward stricter legal oversight of the religious landscape.
