The heavy rains that have been pounding Cotonou for several days continue to cause property damage. On the morning of Tuesday, July 14, 2026, a large tree was uprooted and fell onto two vehicles parked on the median strip in Cadjèhoun. While no loss of life has been reported, the material damage is considerable.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of the morning, due to the combined effect of persistent rainfall and strong winds. The large tree, weakened by the severe weather, fell onto two vehicles belonging to a Chinese company located in the area.

The cars sustained significant damage: their roofs were dented, their windows and windshields shattered, and several body panels were severely crushed by the falling tree trunk.

The driver of the vehicles stated that he discovered the damage shortly after the incident. « It happened around 4:00 AM. I arrived at the scene around 5:00 AM and saw the damage. Unfortunately, it was already too late, » he explained.

Given the extent of the damage, a recovery operation is necessary. « The tree will have to be cut down to free one of the vehicles. For the second, it’s still difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and the salvage possibilities, » he added.

Upon being informed of the situation, the relevant departments of the Cotonou city hall quickly arrived at the scene to conduct an assessment. According to Sègbédji Thiburce Folly, head of the municipality’s Environment, Risk Management, and Disaster Department, the absence of casualties is the main relief. « Given the urgency of the situation, my superiors dispatched me to the scene. We confirmed that a tree had fallen on two vehicles. Fortunately, no lives were lost, » he stated.

The municipal official did not, however, hide his concern regarding the extent of the material damage. « The damage to the vehicles is enormous. It’s a regrettable situation, considering the value of a vehicle, » he emphasized.

Taking the opportunity, he urged residents to be cautious, particularly during this rainy season. « I encourage citizens to avoid parking their vehicles under trees during periods of heavy rain. The risks of falling branches or uprooting are real. » Furthermore, lightning can also pose a danger under trees during inclement weather,” he advised.

He added that prolonged rain can weaken the root system and make some trees unstable. “Soil characteristics vary from one area to another. It is therefore important to be extra vigilant. The town hall will continue its awareness campaigns to further inform the public about the risks associated with parking under trees, especially during the rainy season,” he concluded.
