The Cameroonian government is preparing to crack down on religious extremism. The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, announced on July 8, 2026, the launch of a large-scale compliance operation aimed at closing 1,400 revival churches deemed irregular throughout the country.

This drastic decision follows a tragedy that deeply shocked the nation: the murder of an 11-year-old girl in Yaoundé on the night of June 27-28. Arrested and detained, the main suspect stated during her interrogation that she had acted under the influence of a pastor. He allegedly led her to believe that a human sacrifice would solve her financial problems. While the justice system continues its investigation to shed full light on this case, the government has decided to put an end to the free rein for clandestine places of worship.

For the authorities, the proliferation of these churches is the result of long-standing administrative laxity that facilitated their establishment, particularly in the heart of working-class neighborhoods. « Faith can no longer be exempt from the law, » declared Minister Paul Atanga Nji, demonstrating the state’s firm stance against regulatory violations.

This crackdown marks a decisive turning point in the management of religious affairs in Cameroon. By tightening controls, the government intends not only to clean up the sector and prevent spiritual abuses, but above all to guarantee the safety of citizens.
