After participating in a capacity-building session organized by the media outlet Banouto, the Director of Publication of Benin Best News, Yaovi Angélo Houndjo, shared the newly acquired skills with his journalists this past weekend. This session provided the editorial staff with effective tools to combat misinformation and improve editorial content.

The fight against misinformation is taking on a new dimension at Benin Best News. Following the recommendations of the prior training, the Director of Publication brought together his editorial team for a strategic knowledge-sharing session focused on ethics, fact-checking, and journalistic responsibility.

The main objective of this initiative was to equip the media professionals at the newspaper with the necessary tools to identify and deconstruct information traps in the digital age.

During the discussions, the emphasis was initially placed on the crucial distinction between concepts that are often confused. Journalists were thus enlightened on the clear distinctions between disinformation (false information deliberately created to harm), misinformation (erroneous information shared in good faith without intent to deceive), and malinformation (information based on reality, but distorted or disseminated to cause harm).

In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the daily work of newsrooms was also examined. The Director of Publication explained to his colleagues the opportunities offered by these new tools, while rigorously warning of the dangers they pose for the manipulation of images and text.

Another crucial aspect of this presentation concerned the resurgence of hate speech, a scourge that journalists must be able to detect and neutralize in order to preserve social cohesion. To this end, fact-checking modules were reviewed. The journalists received training in systematic cross-checking techniques and the use of digital tools to verify the accuracy of information before it is broadcast or published.

At the end of the session, the editorial staff expressed their great satisfaction. Pleased to have enriched their technical vocabulary and acquired immediately applicable practical skills, they felt better equipped to produce high-quality, credible, and rigorous journalism.

With this training, Benin Best News reaffirms its commitment to promoting responsible journalism that respects ethical standards and is resolutely committed to combating the manipulation of the masses.
