Their « mystical armor » proved useless against the patrol. Three suspected cybercriminals, aged 21 to 25, were apprehended by the Republican Police in Dévéhomey (Dogbo commune) as they returned from a nighttime occult ritual.

Thinking they could ride incognito on their motorcycles under the protection of their amulets, the three young men crossed paths with law enforcement in the middle of the night. This encounter immediately ended their escape.

During the search, the police discovered a veritable arsenal, combining high-tech and esoteric items:

Digital Equipment: 6 Android smartphones and 1 keypad phone.

Ritual objects: A box of black soap, rings, supposedly mystical potions, and a carton of sugar.

Cash: 12,100 FCFA.

Confessing during their interrogation, the suspects openly admitted to engaging in online fraud. They confessed that they had just returned from a charlatan’s home in Kpodaha (Ayomi district). The purpose of this mystical detour? To use the black soap and other ingredients to « bewitch » and lure potential victims online.

A police team immediately went to the traditional healer’s home to conduct a search. Whether warned or simply lucky, he had already fled the premises.

Currently in custody, the trio has been transferred to the National Center for Digital Investigations (CNIN). Specialized investigators will be tasked with analyzing their phones to assess the extent of their fraud and identify their victims.

This arrest once again highlights the persistent link between cybercrime and occult practices in Benin, a combination that is under scrutiny by the authorities.
