GUINEAN ARMY: Mamadi Doumbouya dismisses 173 military personnel, including Commander Michel Lamah
In a presidential decree announced on RTG on August 24, 2026, Guinean Head of State Mamadi Doumbouya formalized the dismissal of 173 military personnel for desertion. Aimed at reorganizing the institution and restoring discipline, this sweeping decision affects several strategic units, including the Special Forces Group (GFS), the Autonomous Airborne Troops Battalion (BATA), the Gendarmerie, and the Army.
Among those sanctioned is Commander Michel Lamah, a prominent figure from the September 5, 2021 coup that sealed the fall of Alpha Condé. His dismissal—alongside other officers such as Captain Bakary Keïta and Chief Warrant Officer Sourakata Traoré—marks a clear break with key players from the regime change and signals a determination to firmly reassert control over the military hierarchy.
Citing Articles 24 and 25 of the General Statute for Military Personnel, this measure is part of an effort to restructure the security apparatus:
Goal of cohesion: To consolidate central authority and ensure the undivided loyalty of troops to the incumbent power.
Risk of internal tension: Sidelining former key allies could stir up unrest within the transition’s established networks.
By carrying out this major purge, the Conakry regime intends to impose a new disciplinary framework on a military institution still shaped by post-2021 dynamics.
