MAJOR CRACKDOWN ON ORGANIZED BEGGING: 662 children rescued in major anti-begging operation
A large-scale operation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has led to the detention of 1,055 West African nationals in Accra and Kumasi. Those apprehended include 662 children, 248 women, and 145 men, as well as local accomplices suspected of facilitating the network.
Targeting key locations where begging takes place, these raids aim to dismantle human trafficking networks. Investigations will now seek to distinguish between vulnerable individuals and those coerced by criminal rings.
All detained individuals have been transferred to a specialized center for immigration status verification. The GIS is working directly with child protection services to rescue and care for the 662 identified minors.
