MOROCCO 2025 AFCON QUALIFIERS : Benin falls back into old habits

(Gernot Rohr and his team return to their old ways)
Away in Kigali for the 4th round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Morocco, the Squirrels of Benin failed to confirm their good momentum. Defeated 2-1, they missed the opportunity to take the top spot in the group, pending the result of the Libya-Nigeria match.
After a convincing home victory (3-0) against the Amavubi of Rwanda, the Beninese players traveled to Kigali with confidence. Unfortunately, their opponents on the day, determined to get their revenge, gained the upper hand. Despite Benin taking the lead shortly before half-time, the Squirrels eventually conceded (2-1).
The Rwandans, more incisive in the second half, turned the game around. They equalized in the 72nd minute and then converted a penalty a few minutes later to seal the victory. With this win, the Amavubi now have 5 points.
Nigeria, who were unable to play against Libya, remain top of Group D with 7 points (one game fewer), followed by Benin (6 points), Rwanda (5 points) and Libya (3 points, one game fewer). No team in this group has yet qualified.
This new setback confirms Benin’s recurring difficulties in securing qualification with any certainty. Benin fans are eagerly awaiting the 5th and 6th rounds, ready to do their calculations to hope for qualification.
