RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SÈTTO – DASSA-ZOUMÈ ROUTE: Official Launch of the 2×2 dual carriageway this Wednesday
Construction work for the reconstruction of the Sètto – Dassa-Zoumè section was officially launched this Wednesday. A result of the partnership between Benin and the United States through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and MCA-Benin Regional, this major project aims to transform a 39.45-kilometer stretch of the RNIE2 national highway.
With a total estimated cost of 288 billion CFA francs, the project includes widening the road into a 2×2 dual carriageway, constructing a new bridge over the Zou River, and installing a modern toll and weigh station. The program is supported by a $202 million U.S. grant, complemented by $89 million in national counterpart funding.
Beyond strengthening drainage infrastructure (culverts, gutters, and ditches), the development aims to smooth out heavy truck traffic, reduce accident rates, and enhance safety for both road users and local residents.
As a critical link in the corridor connecting Cotonou to the country’s interior and landlocked neighboring nations, this modernized route is expected to lower transport costs and strengthen the competitiveness of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou.
For neighboring communities, these works open new economic prospects, particularly regarding local employment, agribusiness development, and technical training.
Following a meticulous preparatory phase conducted in late August by all key stakeholders, including the construction company SOGEA-SATOM, the focus is now on adhering to deadlines, environmental standards, and infrastructure quality.
