ROAD INCIVILITY IN PARAKOU: An evasive maneuver causes a rollover on the Kérékou-Maga axis
A dramatic accident occurred this Sunday, September 27, 2026, in Parakou. While fortunately no casualties were reported, this narrowly avoided tragedy once again highlights the constant danger of wrong-way driving in the northern metropolis.
Some habits kill, or come dangerously close to it. Last Sunday, the stretch between the Mathieu Kérékou and Hubert Koutoukou Maga intersections could have turned tragic. While driving normally from the Kérékou intersection, the driver of a Toyota Highlander found himself face-to-face with a motorcyclist riding against the flow of traffic. Reacting reflexively to avoid a direct impact, the vehicle driver swerved sharply, losing control. The car rolled over before coming to a stop off the road.
Alerted immediately, officers from Parakou’s 1st District Police Station rushed to the scene to conduct the standard investigation, clear the traffic, and tow the wreckage.
While this accident resulted only in material damage, it is a symptom of a recurring problem plaguing Parakou’s traffic. On several major roads in the city, wrong-way driving has become almost normalized. To avoid a detour of a few hundred meters or to bypass a central reservation more quickly, many road users, particularly motorcyclists, deliberately choose to ride against oncoming traffic.
This reckless behavior creates a deadly element of surprise for drivers who obey traffic laws. In the specific case of this accident, it was the driver’s selflessness, choosing to sacrifice his vehicle rather than strike the motorcyclist—that prevented the loss of human life.
In the face of growing infractions that put law-abiding road users at risk, this latest incident reopens the debate on the need for stricter police enforcement and penalties, as well as improved urban road design to eliminate these dangerous shortcuts.
