Senegal’s Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has reached a new political milestone. This Saturday, July 25, 2026, he officially launched his own party, “Kiiraay: Republican Patriots,” at the King Fahd Palace in Dakar. This announcement marks his definitive break with Pastef, which he co-founded with Ousmane Sonko.

Addressing a large gathering, the president explained the meaning of “Kiiraay,” meaning “protection” in Wolof, affirming his commitment to being a bulwark for the institutions, the Republic, and its fundamental values. Calling for transcending partisan divisions, he urged citizens to prioritize the common good.

His speech, however, was marked by thinly veiled barbs aimed at the opposition, particularly his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, now president of the National Assembly. Bassirou Diomaye Faye warned that no political interest should threaten the stability or progress of Senegal. With this new team, the president is now equipping himself to solidify his own path at the helm of the country.
