SHOWDOWN WITH WASHINGTON: Beninese Judge Reine Alapini-Gansou Takes Legal Action Against US Sanctions
Faced with the punitive measures decreed by the Trump administration, Beninese judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou and two of her colleagues from the International Criminal Court (ICC) are fighting back. They are suing the United States in its own courts to overturn sanctions they deem illegal.
This is a first in the annals of judicial diplomacy. Refusing to keep a low profile, Beninese judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou has chosen to launch her attack on American legal grounds. Alongside two other ICC judges, she is demanding the annulment of the financial reprisals and travel restrictions imposed by the White House.
For these high-ranking judges, these sanctions constitute an attempt at intimidation aimed at paralyzing their investigations and undermining the impartiality of the Hague Court. The message delivered to the American judge is clear: by personally attacking the judges, Washington is challenging the very principle of fair international justice.
