A truck carrying food supplies for school canteens was involved in a traffic accident on Saturday, September 5, 2026, on the RNIE 3 national highway near Cosso, in the Cotiakou district, Tanguiéta municipality. The driver was injured, while no loss of life was reported.

According to information reported by the Tanguiéta Local Rural Radio station, the truck was traveling on Inter-State Highway No. 3 when the driver lost control on the Cosso downhill slope, located about ten kilometers from downtown Tanguiéta.

The driver was evacuated to the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Hospital in Tanguiéta for medical treatment. Although no fatalities were reported, the vehicle sustained significant material damage.

The truck was transporting food items provided by the World Food Programme (WFP). As a result of the impact, part of the cargo was affected, though the exact extent of the food loss has not yet been specified.

This incident comes as the Beninese government announced the expansion of the school canteen program for the 2026–2027 academic year, targeting 1.9 million schoolchildren.

Officers from the Republican Police went to the scene to secure the area and protect the intact food supplies. Authorities will now need to assess the damage to determine the appropriate measures to take.

The exact circumstances surrounding the loss of control remain to be established. Focus has now shifted to the driver’s recovery and replacing the damaged cargo to prevent any supply disruptions in schools.
