SECURITY AND SUB-REGIONAL COOPERATION: Benin-Nigeria Axis Strengthened in the Face of the Terrorist Threat

On an official visit to Cotonou this Tuesday, the Nigerian Minister of Defense, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, reaffirmed Abuja’s firm commitment to forging a strategic military partnership with Benin. On the agenda: intelligence sharing, border surveillance, and community engagement.

Faced with the growing security challenge in West Africa, Benin and Nigeria are joining forces. This Tuesday, the Nigerian Minister of Defense, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, arrived in Benin for a crucial working visit focused on strengthening military cooperation between the two neighboring nations.

Welcomed upon his arrival at Cardinal Bernardin Gantin International Airport by Gildas Agonkan, Minister Delegate to the President of the Republic in charge of National Defense, General Musa was accompanied by a large delegation of high-ranking Nigerian military officials.

The first symbolic stop on this trip was the Togbin military base. The Nigerian minister visited the base to meet directly with the Nigerian army contingent currently stationed in Benin as part of bilateral agreements.

Commending the discipline and dedication of his troops to peacekeeping, General Musa highlighted their impressive performance at the military parade on August 1st, marking Benin’s 66th Independence Day. For the Nigerian Minister of Defense, this participation alone illustrates the depth and strength of the mutual trust between the two armed forces.

The two delegations then met for a high-level working session. Exchanges of tactical intelligence, joint patrols, border security, and the fight against terrorism were central to the discussions.

For Beninese Minister Gildas Agonkan, the time for immediate and coordinated action is now: « Terrorism is a threat without borders or nationality. » “We absolutely must pool our resources and strategies to address this,” he emphasized.

Carrying a message from the Nigerian president, General Musa reiterated Abuja’s commitment to joining forces with Cotonou to secure the borders and preserve the territorial integrity of both countries.

Beyond the strictly military response, General Christopher Gwabin Musa made a pressing appeal to the civilian population, whom he considers the essential link in the security apparatus.

“Victory against terrorism undoubtedly depends on the cooperation of the population. If citizens refuse to act as intermediaries for terrorist groups and report any suspicious activity, these criminals will find no fertile ground to establish themselves,” he stressed.

This official visit marks a strategic turning point in diplomatic and military relations between Benin and Nigeria. By intensifying their joint operations, the two neighboring giants intend to erect an impenetrable barrier to guarantee stability and lasting peace in the sub-region.
