BENIN-NIGER DIPLOMATIC CRISIS: General Tiani Demands « Healing the Wounds » Before Any Border Reopening Agreement
Three years after seizing power, General Abdourahamane Tiani is opening the door to dialogue with Cotonou, but without rushing. While acknowledging a clear easing of diplomatic tensions, the head of Niger’s transitional government is laying down his conditions: no borders will be reopened until the aftereffects of the crisis are fully resolved.
In an interview given to national television on the occasion of the third anniversary of his rise to power, the Nigerien leader acknowledged the improvement in bilateral relations, boosted in particular by the visit to Niger of Beninese President Romuald Wadagni in early June 2026.
A significant step forward, but insufficient to seal an immediate reconciliation. « A lot of water has flowed under the bridge. » “There are still traces, wounds that must first be bandaged and properly treated,” warned General Tiani.
For Niamey, the stakes go beyond simply removing the barriers: Niger demands the establishment of robust legal and security mechanisms to prevent any future unilateral closure by either state.
While no official date has yet been set, the ball is in the court of both embassies. Between a stated desire to cooperate and strategic caution, the path to lasting normalization promises to be challenging.
