CRACKDOWN » OPERATION ON COTONOU’S LAGOON SHORE: 8 Individuals Arrested and a Ghetto Dismantled
The Republican Police are maintaining pressure on criminal networks in Cotonou. A forceful raid, conducted on Monday, June 29, 2026, by officers from the 7th arrondissement police station, resulted in the arrest of eight individuals on the lagoon shore, located just east of the Mahulé market. The operation also led to a significant seizure of illicit goods.
As part of the ongoing fight against centers of serious crime, this offensive has borne fruit. The meticulous searches carried out at the site allowed law enforcement to seize a considerable quantity of psychotropic drugs and harmful substances:
314 balls of marijuana;
82 tramadol tablets (a highly regulated substance);
109 sachets of adulterated beverages of various brands.
To effectively clean up the area and ensure its long-term cleanup, the security forces did not simply arrest the suspects. The police proceeded to completely dismantle and burn down the makeshift shelters that served as ghettos, thus preventing any attempt by dealers and users to immediately re-establish themselves.
As for the eight people arrested, their fate now rests with the justice system. They have been placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities to answer for their actions.
