DISTANCE LEARNING IN BENIN: Four Public Universities Get a Makeover for the 2026-2027 Academic Year
The Beninese government has taken a decisive step in its digital education transition. During the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the executive branch formalized the launch of major technical infrastructure upgrades. The goal: to deploy distance learning on a large scale within four of the country’s public universities starting with the next academic year.
This structural reform addresses a major challenge: the chronic overcrowding of university infrastructure. By paving the way for distance learning, the Beninese government is killing two birds with one stone. On the one hand, it is relieving overcrowding in lecture halls; on the other, it is offering unprecedented flexibility to students, who can now pursue their studies regardless of their location.
The project’s ambition: To modernize teaching methods, enrich course offerings, and guarantee equitable access to high-quality education for all.
Four leading institutions are spearheading this pilot phase:
UAC: The University of Abomey-Calavi
UP: The University of Parakou
UNSTIM: The National University of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
UNA: The National University of Agriculture
Starting with the next academic year, students at these four institutions will be able to connect to their virtual classrooms via the official platform etudiant.bj.
To implement this transformation, the Council of Ministers has approved contracts with several specialized service providers. Priority projects are currently focused on three strategic sites, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art digital equipment:
The Abomey-Calavi campus
The Parakou campus
The Faculty of Health Sciences (FSS) in Cotonou
This modernization of technical infrastructure promises to profoundly transform the daily lives of students and the landscape of higher education in Benin. With the start of the academic year just a few months away, the focus remains on the operational deployment and on-the-ground effectiveness of this shift to digital.
