FIGHT AGAINST SMUGGLING: Beninese Customs Goes on the Offensive with Technology
The crackdown on illicit networks in Benin is intensifying. On August 6 and 7, 2026, operations conducted in the Ouémé and Donga departments enabled Beninese Customs to make a major seizure: 19,860 packs of smuggled cigarettes and 496 kg of illicit pharmaceuticals.
This dual operation marks a major tactical shift: the introduction of aerial reconnaissance using drones to detect concealed shipments.
Gone are the days when customs surveillance was limited to roadblocks alone. On August 6, during a check in Danvidokpo (Ouémé department), agents intercepted an unassuming dump truck. On the ground, nothing betrayed the cargo. It was the keen eye of a surveillance drone that detected structural anomalies in the cargo.
A thorough search confirmed the suspicion:
17,800 packs of contraband cigarettes.
496 kg of smuggled medications, divided into four packages, lacking any traceability or health authorization.
By directly targeting the suspect vehicle, the technology prevented a lengthy delay while neutralizing a direct threat to public health.
The very next day, August 7, the operation continued in the Donga department. A second team in the field managed to intercept an additional 2,060 packs of cigarettes destined for the black market.
In the space of 48 hours, nearly 20,000 packs of cigarettes and half a ton of dangerous pharmaceuticals were removed from circulation.
Faced with increasingly ingenious smugglers, the Beninese customs administration is responding by modernizing its tools.
From the air to the ground, Beninese customs is firmly tightening the noose around traffickers. In this relentless fight against the black market, technological innovation has become the Republic’s spearhead.
