SENEGALESE FOOTBALL: Pape Thiaw sacked after the 2026 World Cup fiasco
The axe has fallen. Saturday, July 11
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) officially announced the dismissal of Pape Thiaw. Meeting in emergency session, the executive committee sanctioned the Lions of Teranga’s early elimination in the round of 32 of the World Cup.
Hailed as one of the favorites for a historic run, Senegal disappointed. After a difficult first round marked by two defeats against France and Norway, and only one victory against Iraq, the team collapsed against Belgium. Leading 2-0 with ten minutes remaining, the Lions completely crumbled, suffering a heartbreaking defeat. A tactical fiasco and poor management of the end of the match sealed the coach’s fate.
In its statement, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) mentions the need to initiate « a new dynamic. » But beyond the pitch, this crisis highlights the federation’s shortcomings: Pape Thiaw led the team at the World Cup without a formal contract and with several months of unpaid wages.
FSF President Abdoulaye Fall will address the media this Monday to explain this rupture and assess this failed campaign.
Appointed two years ago, Pape Thiaw leaves his post with a record of 16 wins in 27 matches. While his tenure will be remembered for a lost AFCON final against Morocco last January, the disappointment of this World Cup proved too much for him. The FSF is now searching for a successor to rebuild the Lions.
