STAR PLACE IN COTONOU: Has Benin’s former « darling » been left in the dark?
In the heart of Cotonou, the star place presents two starkly contrasting faces. By day, the public space is bustling: travelers in transit, students, and local residents cross paths there, seeking a moment of respite in the generous shade of its large trees. But as soon as the sun sets, the scene shifts dramatically. The square plunges into total darkness, transforming a lively hub into a high-risk zone.
Without any functional street lighting, the site becomes a breeding ground for insecurity. Pedestrians crossing the area at night live in constant fear of assault or mugging. This situation stands in sharp contrast to the popularity enjoyed by the country’s newer monuments, such as Place Bio Guera or Place de l’Amazone in Cotonou. Well-lit, secure, and attractive, these newer sites teem with people late into the night, thanks to ongoing investment in their upkeep.
