Cotonou has become the world capital of public development finance since Monday, June 29, 2026. Benin is hosting the 15th meeting of the IDFC (International Development Finance Club) Steering Committee. This major event brings together financial decision-makers from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas to rethink development finance in the face of global economic upheaval.

Discussions at this high-level session are focusing on strategic themes for the future of the planet and, more specifically, West Africa: Innovative financial mechanisms and increased mobilization of private capital; Preparations for COP31 and accelerating green industrialization; Sustainable investment opportunities to stimulate resilient and inclusive growth.

“Governments, markets, and communities expect us to mobilize capital, reduce risks, and accelerate action.” “According to Serge Ekué, President of the BOAD and current Chairman of the IDFC.

At the opening of the proceedings, Serge Ekué emphasized the historical responsibility incumbent upon public development banks. He believes the future of the network depends on sharing expertise and strengthening cooperation to implement concrete solutions on the ground.

The Beninese government, through its Minister Delegate for External Resource Mobilization, called for a paradigm shift:

“The real issue is no longer the availability of financial resources, but our collective capacity to direct funding towards sectors and projects that generate sustainable growth, jobs, and respect the environment.”

By hosting this 15th meeting of the IDFC Steering Committee, Benin is further establishing itself as a key hub for international cooperation. The choice of Cotonou reflects the country’s renewed credibility and the confidence of donors in the economic and institutional reforms undertaken by the Beninese authorities.
