TRAGEDY IN BOHICON: Wall collapse during Egungun performance leaves one dead
A young man in his twenties lost his life on Saturday, July 18, 2026, in Houawé Wangnassa, in the commune of Bohicon (Zou department). The tragedy occurred during a festive gathering that turned tragic.
According to Radio Alohado, a large crowd had gathered in the afternoon at the SONON house to attend an Egungun demonstration. Due to lack of space inside, several spectators had positioned themselves behind a perimeter wall to watch the event. The wall suddenly collapsed on them, taking everyone by surprise.
A young apprentice mason, who had not been working for his employer for several months, was fatally struck and died at the scene. His former mentor expressed his profound grief and sorrow upon hearing the news.
The public prosecutor has been notified of the case. Discussions were underway between the organizers, the victim’s family, and local authorities to arrange for the removal of the body. This tragic accident raises crucial questions about public safety at large public gatherings in the region.
