The reason: a power outage at the prison where he is being held, preventing his transfer to the Pretoria court. The case has therefore been postponed to September 23, 2026.
This unforeseen logistical incident highlights the difficulties with prison infrastructure and their direct impact on the judicial calendar.
Arrested on April 13, 2026, in South Africa, Kémi Séba is facing two separate legal proceedings:
The local South African proceedings: He is being prosecuted for attempting to illegally leave the country for Zimbabwe in possession of documents deemed irregular.
Benin’s extradition request: Cotonou is demanding his repatriation on two major charges: advocating crimes against state security and inciting rebellion.

For Benin, extraditing the activist is a priority so he can be tried on its national territory.
