Standing at approximately 1.62 meters tall, with a fair complexion and a vibrant sixty-something personality, Awawou Bagnan Zimé speaks impeccable French. A woman of conviction and deeply involved in politics, Ms. Awawou Bagnan Zimé nevertheless carries the weight of an invisible struggle. Widowed for ten years, her life changed dramatically in 2015 with the death of her husband. Today, as coordinator of the Association of Widows in Solidarity of Benin, she embodies resilience in the face of the precarious situation that threatens thousands of women.

The loss of a husband almost always means the loss of the main source of income. Overnight, widows become solely responsible for the daily expenses: rent, school fees, food, and healthcare.

Many women have to learn to manage a budget they previously couldn’t control, negotiate with landlords, and reinvent their daily lives to survive. Their days are long, filled with work, raising children, housework, and administrative tasks. For them, rest has become a luxury.

« Today, I’ve become a father, a mother, a sister, an older sister, an uncle… I’m everything in the house, » says Ms. Awawou bitterly.

Facing life’s challenges alone, she juggles multiple roles and fights hard to provide for her family. Giving up is out of the question for her: « I’m not sitting idly by; I’m trying to make ends meet. I do small businesses, things like that, to help us, » she says with dignity.

Through the Association of Widows in Solidarity of Borgou, Ms. Awawou’s objective is clear: to get the government and administrations to listen to the plight of these marginalized women and to take action to ensure their social protection.

On this International Widows’ Day, she made a passionate appeal to the younger generation. She urged young women to fight for their financial independence. Her advice as an elder served as a warning: one must be able to support oneself, because no one knows what tomorrow will bring. Faced with life’s uncertainties, independence is no longer a choice, it is a weapon of survival.
