ANTI-CORRUPTION FIGHT: The Republican Police Launches an Offensive Against Extortion

The Director General of the Republican Police, Brice K. Allowanou, is taking a firm stance. Faced with persistent acts of corruption on the roads, the institution is launching a major internal cleanup operation and calling on the public to break the silence.

Despite the reforms undertaken since 2016, including the removal of fixed checkpoints, the deployment of corridor patrols, the SECUROUTE project, and the widespread use of body cameras, extortion of road users by some corrupt officers remains a reality. This stark reality was highlighted on July 27, 2026, in Cotonou by the high command of the Republican Police.

« This is a persistent trend that tarnishes the image of the institution and directly harms our fellow citizens, » emphasized Director General Brice K. Allowanou, determined to restore a severely shaken bond of trust.

To eradicate this scourge, the police hierarchy is implementing an action plan based on four main pillars:

Mandatory retirement and legal action: Any officer caught in the act of corruption will face immediate dismissal, regardless of any criminal proceedings.

Shared responsibility of command: Unit leaders (commissioners and commanders) will be directly held accountable for repeated misconduct observed within their ranks.

Increased audits: More frequent unannounced inspections, both internal and external.

Secure citizen participation: Implementation of reporting channels accessible 24/7.

The institution is now calling on road users to become active participants in this public health initiative. The Director General’s message is clear: « Demand a ticket, demand a receipt, refuse to negotiate! » Citizens are encouraged to submit any evidence (photos, videos, recordings) under a strict guarantee of anonymity.

Brice K. Allowanou revealed that several cases of misconduct are currently under investigation and that the first disciplinary sanctions will be issued very soon. The stated objective is to definitively establish a modern, ethical, and community-based police force dedicated solely to serving the public.
