UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE THREE COLORS: Reinventing Benin Every Day
A nation’s flag is never simply a piece of cloth hanging from a pole. It is a collective promise, a moral contract etched in the memory of an entire people. Every day, the Beninese flag displays three stripes of light: green, yellow, and red, embodying a profound philosophy just waiting to be lived.
What if we stopped merely looking at our flag and started embodying it?
Green: Cultivating the Hope of Renewal
The green of our flag represents not only our fertile lands; it carries the hope of renewal. Renewal is not a miracle that falls from the sky; it is a decision. It is built on the rigor of a craftsman, the passion of an entrepreneur, the integrity of a public servant, and the commitment of the youth. Believing in renewal means rejecting cynicism, planting today the seeds of what we want to reap tomorrow, and acting with the certainty that Benin has everything it needs to shine.
Red: Drawing on the courage of our ancestors
Red evokes courage. It represents the blood shed by our heroes to bequeath us a free land, but it also represents everyday bravery. It takes courage to be honest where the easy path is tempting, courage to innovate, courage to defend justice and preserve national unity despite our differences. This red is a powerful reminder: no great destiny has ever been achieved through fear or passivity.
Yellow: Fulfilling the promise of greatness
Yellow is the harbinger of light, the promise of a prosperous future that awaits us. But a promise only becomes reality if we work to fulfill it. This color invites us to strive for excellence in everything we undertake. It reminds us that Benin’s influence on the continental and global stage depends on the individual and collective brilliance of each of its citizens.
Beyond speeches and official ceremonies, true civic responsibility is measured by how we embody these three colors in our daily actions.
In some countries, no one has the right to burn the national flag in public: this act is severely punished, as it is considered an act of desecration. This testifies to the immense value placed on the national colors. But beyond respecting the law, it is not simply a matter of symbols.
Let us be the builders of this hope, the bearers of this courage, and the architects of this bright omen. Let us raise our hearts and our actions to the level of our flag.
